A 3rd draft concept design for the Nu'uanu Complete Streets project will be made available on the City and County's Complete Street's website by the end of March 2018.  This design was developed in response to community opposition to reducing on-street parking and reducing the number of lanes on Nu'uanu Avenue.

The new design still reduces lanes, but retains most of the on-street parking and widens sidewalks for pedestrian safety.  A preliminary review of the design shows one mauka bound bike lane from School Street to Kuakini Street.  We will post the 3rd design on this website when it is available.

The next community meeting where you can voice your opinion is slated for end of April or sometime in May 2018.  As we have more details we will post them here.

Preliminary draft concept designs for complete streets improvements to Liliha Street and Nu'uanu Avenue were presented at community events in December.  Below are two alternative working drafts for Nu'uanu Avenue from School Street up to Wyllie Street.

Please note that a 3rd alternative is being developed that omits bike lanes and includes pedestrian improvements.  ETA for that design is sometime in February.

At the December 12th community meeting, several residents asked why the City and County of Honolulu hasn't already repaved Nu'uanu Avenue.

In 2009, the State passed a law requiring all Counties and the State DOT to adopt a Complete Streets policy. The City and County of Honolulu passed a Complete Streets policy (Ordinance 12-15) in 2012.  In 2016, the City and County of Honolulu finalized its Complete Streets Design Manual and hired a Complete Streets Program Administrator to move toward implementation of improvements that make Honolulu’s streets and neighborhoods safe and inviting for users of all ages or abilities.

Instead of simply repaving Nu'uanu Avenue, the City will be implementing some type of Complete Streets solution.  Two designs (above) were made available at several community meetings at the end of 2017.  However, many in the community who attended these meetings were unhappy that the designs would reduce lanes and reduce street parking.  This feedback resulted in the 3rd alternative design being developed.

The Project Team is continuing to accept community input on the draft concept designs for Nu'uanu Avenue.  Revised concepts are expected to be presented to the community in spring of 2018.
